Chaos Crags, a group of dacite domes just north of Lassen Peak, were preceded by pyroclastic volcanism in the same area which produced pumiceous tephra and hot pyroclastic flows, some of which traveled up to 8 km. Four or five domes were then erupted and approximately 300 years ago three or more high-velocity, air cushioned avalanches of rock debris traveled as far as 4.3 km. Because of this, pyroclastic flows are considered a potential hazard if future volcanic activity occurs in the Chaos Crags or Lassen Peak area. The Manzanita Lake area is one of the busiest areas in the Lassen Volcanic National Park and is the most vulnerable if another avalanche occurs. Discussed is the geologic activity in the area, pyroclastic-flow deposits, and volcanic hazards. Maps are provided showing the distribution of geologic units described in the text.
