A Historical and Architectural Survey of Conway, Horry County, South Carolina, 2005
New South Associates, Reed MB, Langdale JB. 2005. A Historical and Architectural Survey of Conway, Horry County, South Carolina, 2005. City of Conway; South Carolina Department of Archives and History
From project summary and objectives: "The City of Conway, in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SCDAH), has funded this historical and architectural survey of Conway. As defined by the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (SCSHPO) and the city officials, the boundaries for this survey encompassed the entire city limits of Conway, an area of approximately twenty square miles. The City of Conway is a proud steward of its past. Although it already possesses a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) commercial district and warehouse district as well as fifteen individually listed NRHP properties, a group of city officials and citizens were interested in recording additional historic properties within the city and evaluating their NRHP eligibility. A survey of the city was undertaken in 1983 and located 151 significant historic structures. This current project was intended to be more comprehensive, taking in all of the buildings constructed before 1955 within the entire city limits. An estimated 500 undocumented historic buildings and structures were slated for documentation and review. The bulk of the buildings were expected to be found near the city center with the most significant properties located in the Conwayborough neighborhood just northwest of the downtown commercial district, in the Racepath neighborhood west of Conwayborough and in the Snowhill neighborhood east of Main Street. The city and the SCSHPO predicted that there would be a large residential NRHP district in the Conwayborough neighborhood as well as scattered individually eligible buildings in the Racepath and Snowhill areas. Funding was provided in part by a 2004 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Conway (project number SC-04-004) administered by the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 45-04-19342) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Conway, South Carolina is a Certified Local Government.
