Survey Report: Phase 1, Downtown Oklahoma City Intensive Survey, September 2009

Preface: "The City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma contracted with the firm Sally Schwenk Associates, Inc. Preservation Professionals (SSA), located in Kansas City, Missouri, to conduct the first phase of a multi-phase cultural resource survey effort over a five-month period that began in May 2009 and, which provided for the identification and evaluation of historic properties for individual significance or as contributing properties to a historic district. The phased project is part of a strategy to implement the development of a complete, fully documented, and comprehensive inventory of historic properties located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, by conducting survey in accordance with National Register Bulletin 24: Guidelines for Local Survey: A Basis for Preservation Planning and National Register Bulletin 15: How to Apply the National Register Criteria/or Evaluation. The first phase of the survey included the downtown central business district as well as the south part of what is commonly referred to as Midtown. The survey area included 215 primary resources generally bounded by North Walker A venue to the west, West Sheridan A venue to the south, North Broadway to the east, and Northwest 10th Street on the north. The survey included commercial, institutional, and residential resources. The Phase I Survey revealed a high concentration of historic commercial resources with residential resources generally located at the north and west edges of the survey area and continuing in adjacent neighborhoods." Funding was provided in part by a 2008 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Oklahoma City (project number OK-08-607) administered by the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 40-08-21741) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
