Heritage Tourism Guidebook, Texas Historical Commission

Introduction: "Heritage tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments of the tourism industry. It is widely believed that heritage tourism can successfully help preserve resources while boosting local economies by generating jobs, new businesses and tax dollars. However, little information exists about heritage tourism development, such as who should consider it, significant aspects and how to develop a successful heritage tourism site, initiative or program. This guidebook is designed to provide assistance to communities or individuals who are interested in developing heritage tourism to preserve historic and cultural resources and boost economies. It begins with an overview of tourism and the heritage tourism industry then identifies issues to consider before beginning a heritage tourism program. If a community or individual is interested in developing heritage tourism, this guidebook provides a step-by-step process including tips and success stories. This guidebook contains a resources section with additional information, as well as divisions and important contacts of the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the Texas Heritage Trail Regions of the Texas Heritage Tourism Program (THTP) of the THC." Funding was provided in part by a 2006 Preserve America grant to the Texas Historical Commission (grant number 48-06-PA-2035) for the Texas Heritage Trails Program: Helping Communities Reach Their Tourism Potential. The grant was administered by the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Preserve America is a federal initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the program include a greater shared knowledge about the nation's past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of our communities.
