Summary Report: Architectural/Historic Survey of Route 66 in Missouri

From introduction: "This report was prepared in partial fulfillment of an HPF grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for an architectural and historic resource survey. The purpose of the survey project was to identify and evaluate the roadside resources directly related to travel and tourism along Route 66 in Missouri. Under the criteria established for the project, the survey was to document those buildings, structures, sites and objects directly associated with Route 66 in the counties of St. Louis, Franklin, Crawford, Phelps, Pulaski, Laclede, Webster, Greene, Lawrence, Jasper, and the city of St. Louis, including all alignments designated during the highway's period of significance. With the approval of the granting agency, the project was amended in April of 1993 to include the city of St. Louis and only five of the ten counties originally proposed for inclusion. The specifics of the amended project are described below. Following some preliminary field work and research, the project consultant and Route 66 Association assembled a list of 266 resources (or 213 individual sites) in September of 1992 which were determined to meet the four criteria established for the purposes of this survey. Using the Secretary of Interior's Criteria for Evaluation as a standard, the list of survey resources included: 1. A building, structure, site, or object which was designed or used to serve the travel trade on U.S. Route 66 and was constructed between the years 1926 - 1955. 2. A building, structure, site or object which may be eligible for individual National Register listing. 3. A building, structure, site or object which contributes to the highway corridor's sense of time and place and historical development and may therefore be a contributing resource in a National Register district. 4. A building, structure, site or object which is necessary to fully develop and evaluate the highway's historic context or associated property types." Funding was provided in part by a 1992 Historic Preservation Fund grant administered by the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office (project number MO-92-220A, grant number 29-92-70127) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
