The Historic Structure Preservation Guide is intended to aid maintenance staff at Adams National Historic Site in performing routine maintenance work and minor repairs, and to provide accurate data to qualified professionals regarding major stabilization or preservation work on structures. It is divided into two volumes: Volume I is the source for repair and replacement information, and Volume II contains the information required for housekeeping. Volume I of the guide contains definitions of types of maintenance work, a chronology log of work and costs, maintenance descriptions, correspondence related to work orders, and handwritten completion report with photographs. Volume II contains architectural drawings and plans. The use of this guide for the Carriage House at Adams National Historic Site begins with the inspection checklist. Inspections would be performed semi-annually by a professional in order to generate the necessary maintenance and repair work. A material identification and description section is provided to assist in determining the appropriate repair work. The list of required repairs would be submitted to the maintenance foreman, who is responsible for completing and recording the repair work. The report notes that the preservation guide is a working document, and it was requested that additional information be added by the park, region, and the Denver Service Center.
