Metrics of resilience and recovery in Floyd Bennett Field North, 2014-2016: Jamaica Bay Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area

This report contains linear, elevation, and volumetric feature changes of Floyd Bennett Field North, a site within Floyd Bennett Field, Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Surveys were conducted from the winter of 2014 to the fall of 2016, and supplemented with LiDAR datasets from August 2010 and July 2013, to capture the effects associated with Hurricane Sandy. The focus of this report is on the resilience and recovery of the beach and dune system along Floyd Bennett Field North. The analysis provides metrics of shoreline displacement, dune crest displacement, site elevation change, and site volumetric change. Floyd Bennett Field North had variable dune crest position, shoreline position, site elevation, and site volumetric change from 2010 to 2016. From 2010 to 2013 the foredune crest and shoreline position both had a mean inland displacement. There was volumetric loss in both the beach and dune features, most likely due to two major storms (Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy). From 2014 to 2016 the foredune crest position was relatively stable, with some erosion in the eastern end of the site. The shoreline change during the survey period had a similar pattern of erosion in the east. Elevation change between seasonal surveys was variable, the winter surveys showed more loss in both the dune and beach elevation than spring or summer. The net comparison from the first survey in November 2014 to the last survey in October 2016 had elevation and volumetric loss in the eastern end of the survey, and gain in the western end. Despite having volumetric loss along the majority of the site, a beach and dune system persisted at Floyd Bennett Field North, showing resilience. Spatial displays of shoreline and foredune linear feature change, elevation change, and volumetric change, and associated metrics are presented within the report.
