Historic Structure Report: Architectural Data Section, The Lemon House, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

Batcheler PH. 1982. Historic Structure Report: Architectural Data Section, The Lemon House, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Denver, Colorado

The Lemon House is the only remaining above-ground structure in National Park Service ownership that is directly related to the operation of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. In addition to its historic use as a tavern and summer home, the building has housed park headquarters, visitor exhibits, visitor services, and a tenant apartment. This report presents the state of architectural data on the history of the structure, including corrections of earlier reports. It also recommends the next phase of structural rehabilitation of the house framing. This report is not intended to be the final study made of the Lemon House, and it does not include detailed recommendations for the restoration of certain rooms. Use of the house at the time of the report's publication prevented detailed research on the architectural finishes of the original interior. The architectural significance of the Lemon House is that it typifies the western movement of styles. Its architectural significance is not nationally important for itself, but it plays a part in illustrating the full picture of our architectural heritage. The data generated for this study was to be kept by Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site headquarters, where it was hoped to serve as a reference for further research. In the long range, when separate interpretive facilities may be developed, the house interior may be researched and restored to its historical appearance.
