A lecture and then a follow up interview with Dr. Richard McKinney. Dr. McKinney served as president of Storer College from 1944 to 1950. In a lecture, Dr. McKinney gives a history of the college and the legacy of John Brown’s raid in relation to the college along with his own experiences and philosophy of education. Dr. Richard McKinney is then interviewed about the history of Storer College as well as his experiences as president. Topics include the Niagara Movement, W.E.B. Du Bois, the meaning of John Brown to Storer, and the circumstances surrounding the closing of Storer College in 1954. Dr. McKinney also speaks about relations between the college and the community of Harpers Ferry including how racism in the white community affected the college.
