Historic Structure Report: Historical Data Section, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site
Brown SA. 1984. Historic Structure Report: Historical Data Section, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
This historic structure report was prepared in response to a request made by Mid-Atlantic Regional Director James W. Coleman, Jr. on September 16, 1983. Data from the report was to be used to plan the preservation and restoration of cultural resources at the park. Emphasis was placed on specific construction data related to the structures. It is not a detailed history of the railroad. The report focuses on specific extant structures along the railroad line which require preservation treatment in accordance with NPS policies. Record Group 17 of the Pennsylvania State Archives is a significant collection of documents that is vital to the study of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, and this collection of records was used during the research for this report. The Allegheny Portage Railroad was an important part of Pennsylvania's canal and railroad transportation system. Where the route crossed the Allegheny Mountains, a series of levels and inclined planes was developed to transport passengers and cargo over the terrain. The Allegheny Portage Railroad was in operation between 1834 and 1855, and the remaining structures are a reminder of the engineering accomplishment and those whose lives were impacted by it. Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site became part of the National Park System in 1964.
