Metrics of resilience and recovery in Floyd Bennett Field South, 2014-2016: Jamaica Bay Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area

This report contains linear, elevation, and volumetric, and linear feature changes at Floyd Bennett Field South, a site at the southern margin of Floyd Bennett Field, Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Surveys were conducted from the winter of 2014 to the fall of 2016, and the analysis includes two LiDAR datasets from August 2010 and November 2012 to capture the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The focus of this report is on the resilience and recovery of the beach and dune system along Floyd Bennett Field South. The analysis provides metrics of shoreline displacement, dune crest displacement, site elevation change, and site volumetric change. The Floyd Bennett Field South site had a relatively consistent seaward displacement of both the dune crest line and the shoreline as well as consistent elevation and volumetric gain from 2010 to 2016. The foredune position moved inland, whereas the shoreline shifted seaward from 2010 to 2012. There was volumetric gain in both the beach and dune area. The surveys from winter 2014 to fall 2016 show the foredune line moved seaward, near to the 2010 pre-storm location. The shoreline moved seaward since the first survey, due to the volumetric gain low on the beach. From 2014 to 2016 there was a consistent pattern of gain low on the beach, with variable volumetric change in the dune area. The beach feature and dune feature have continued to gain in elevation and volume throughout the survey period, showing resilience in the geomorphological system. Spatial displays of elevation change, volumetric change, shoreline and foredune linear feature change, and associated metrics are presented in this report. Two surveys were conducted seaward of the metal bulkhead located east of Floyd Bennett Field South. Information about elevation and volumetric changes in this area is available in the Appendix.
