Introduction: "The purpose of this project is to identify, research and prepare Florida Site File forms for all pre-1945 properties in the neighborhood of the City of St. Petersburg known as Kenwood, specifically the area of the city bounded by Interstate 275 on the east, 1st Avenue N on the south, 34th Street N on the west, and 9th Avenue N on the north. This neighborhood is known as one of the historic residential areas of the city, and specific information was needed about its properties prior to making any decisions regarding Kenwood’s eligibility for local listing, or listing on the National Register of Historic Places, possibly as a historic district, or as individual buildings or groups of buildings within the boundaries. The city of St. Petersburg has been receiving Certified Local Government Grants focusing on updating the City’s architectural and historic survey since 1991. The present grant will continue the City’s policy of surveying its Neighborhood Planning Areas. The Uptown, Crescent Lake and Crescent Heights neighborhoods are another key portion of this overall survey. Funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of St. Petersburg administered by the Florida State Historic Preservation Office and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. St. Petersburg, Florida is a Certified Local Government.
