Introduction: "In 1991, the City of St. Petersburg received a Federal Certified Local Government Historic Preservation Grant through the Division of Historical Resources to produce a Historic Preservation Element for the Local Comprehensive Plan and to conduct an architectural and historical survey of the Old Southeast Neighborhood. A Historic Preservation Consultant was hired to complete the survey, while the City of St. Petersburg Planning staff produced the Historic Preservation Element The objectives of this survey were to identify all pre-1945 structures located within the Old Southeast Neighborhood and produce Florida Site File forms and a Survey Report. Sites would be identified and evaluated using National Register Criteria, and categories established by the City. Additionally, the City agreed to update Florida Site File forms on 135 sites throughout the City that were partially surveyed in 1986. The survey resulted in identification of 311 new sites in the Old Southeast and the updating of 135 sites previously surveyed for the Florida Site File." Funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of St. Petersburg administered by the Florida State Historic Preservation Office and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. St. Petersburg, Florida is a Certified Local Government.
