St. Petersburg Great Neighborhood Partnership, Survey Phase II: Survey of North Shore, Roser Park, and a Portion of Round Lake

Introduction: "This survey is the second in a series of projects undertaken by the St. Petersburg Great Neighborhood Partnership program to locate and document resources within historic neighborhoods in the city. It was funded by the City of St. Petersburg with assistance from the Florida Department of State,Division of Historical Resources and the Federal Certified Local Government program. Several previous surveys have been conducted in the city during the past two decades. In 1977 a city-wide survey was completed by the St. Petersburg Planning Department with assistance from a Historic Site Specialist from the state’s Division of Historical Resources (then known as the Division of Archives, History, and Records Management). During the project some 600 of the most architecturally and historically significant properties constructed in the city before 1940 were recorded. In addition, the survey provided information that was useful in targeting areas for further study. A second survey done in 1986 utilized the same criteria in evaluating 135 additional sites. That project, however, did not meet the revised standards of the state and none of the properties surveyed were recorded in the Florida Site File. In 1992 the City began a systematic survey of historic neighborhoods in conjunction with the Great Neighborhood Partnership program. The initial area surveyed under the program was the Old Southeast Neighborhood. Undertaken with the aid of a grant from the Federal Certified Local Government program, the survey identified and recorded 311 new properties constructed before 1945 and updated the 135 sites surveyed during the 1986 project for listing in the site file. The present project encompasses the North Shore, Roser Park, and a portion of the Round Lake areas of the city. The survey was designed to be comprehensive and include all buildings, regardless of their integrity, constructed before 1945. Under the criteria established, a total of 2,511 buildings were recorded in the three areas." Funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of St. Petersburg administered by the Florida State Historic Preservation Office and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
