This report summarizes actions taken to fulfill the specifications laid out in the Kawaihae Fire Burned Area Rehabilitation Plan (2015) for the first year of rehabilitation following fire (FY 2016) at Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site (PUHE). The Kawaihae fire started on 8 August 2015 and burned a total of 4,500 acres including PUHE and the surrounding area. Within the park, 64 acres were burned equaling 74% of the total park area. This report primarily focuses on the BAR 1 specification, Pili Grass Rehabilitation to Exclude Non-Native Species. Under the BAR 2 specification, Non-Emergency Repairs to Infrastructure, the four PUHE trail counters damaged by the fire were repaired (2 are currently in use and 2 are being stored as back-ups) and the work on the fiber optic line to the Park Maintenance area and the water line to the Park Headquarters was also completed.
