Additional research associated with this Historic Structure Report Addendum was directed towards additional information about the interior and exterior of the Lemon House and the summit level site, during and after the historic period. This revisits previous research conducted on the structure. Although new data has not been uncovered to definitively identify the construction date of the Lemon House, investigation of the fabric of the interior resulted in a suggested construction date to the mid to late 1830s. The Lemon House is a large, two-story stone structure built by Samuel Lemon, likely with the intention of capitalizing on a large volume of trade that was anticipated form the newly constructed Portage Railroad. The historic landscape adjacent to the structure is an integral part of the history of the Portage Railroad. The working landscape that developed during the railroad era (1831-1854) evolved from an isolated and heavily wooded mountainous region into a vital industrial, agricultural, and commercial landscape. The architectural and archeological portions of this document conclude that a porch existed on the south and east sides of the structure, and it is recommended that this be reconstructed. Interior restoration is also recommended, such as restoring interior paint finishes. The report contains documentation of surrounding landscape features and the site's historic integrity, with treatment recommendations for the historic landscape.
