Metrics of resilience and recovery in Fort Tilden, 2014-2016: Jamaica Bay Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area

This report contains linear feature changes, elevation changes, and volumetric changes at Fort Tilden, a site along the western portion of Breezy Point spit, Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Surveys were conducted from the winter of 2014 to the fall of 2016, augmented by LiDAR datasets from August 2010 and November 2012, to track the impacts of Hurricane Sandy. The focus of this report is on the resilience and recovery of the beach and dune system along Fort Tilden. The analysis provides metrics of shoreline displacement, dune crest displacement, elevation change, and volumetric change. Fort Tilden was greatly impacted by Hurricane Sandy, much of the existing foredune was eliminated and there was volumetric loss throughout the site. In the post-storm period, a new foredune line was established inland of the pre-storm location. There was deposition low on the beach, and very little volumetric change in the dune feature. The shoreline has been displaced seaward due to the volumetric gain low on the beach. There was a beach nourishment project that occurred in 2014 in the Rockaways and Jacob Riis that may have contributed to this gain in the beach feature. Fort Tilden maintained a beach-dune system post storm, and the beach feature has increased in volume since 2010. The dune system has lost volume since 2010 and has not been reestablished in its pre-storm location. Despite the volumetric loss in the dune feature, a beach and dune topographical system still persist at Fort Tilden, showing resilience. Spatial displays of elevation change, volumetric change, shoreline and foredune linear feature change, and associated metrics are presented within the report.
