This report covers stabilization measures that are recommended to preserve three minor farm structures on three farms of Antietam National Battlefield. The structures under consideration are the slave quarters on the Piper Farm, a smoke house or meat curing building on the Dorsey Farm, and the spring house on the Spielman Farm. All of these buildings were in the vicinity of heavy fighting during the Civil War fighting that took place here, and they had received little or no maintenance for a number of years prior to this report. At the time of this report, all but the smoke house were being used by local farmers under special use permits granted by the National Park Service. Each section includes a description of the structure, proposed work, and a cost estimate. The report also includes drawings made by student architects of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, who measured and recorded the structures during the summer of 1968.
