From November 2016 through July 2017, a group of National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring Division (IMD) staff convened as a Long-Term Data Management Task Force to recommend a future path for managing the division’s scientific data and information. The Structured Decision Making (SDM) process allowed the Task Force to use a proven tool to arrive at decisions, maintain transparency, and document each step of the process from initial problem definition through to final recommendations. Of the seven alternatives that the Task Force developed and considered during the final evaluation, the Remodeled Data Store alternative consistently achieved the highest scores among individuals and across differing exploratory analyses. Remodeled Data Store leverages the existing Data Store application (https://irma.nps.gov/Data Store) and allows networks to continue many of their current practices while meeting long-term goals.
