The primary monitoring goal of this protocol is to identify changes in the abundance and occupancy of cave aquatic biota (CAB) in selected cave stream reaches for resource managers at Cumberland Gap NHP, Mammoth Cave NP, and Russell Cave NM. In FY15 the protocol lead and park staff conducted two pilot sampling events at a Mammoth Cave NP stream segment (i.e., Bridge Avenue) where we obtained count data on commonly observed CAB. During each event two separate teams, consisting of an observer and recorder, made timed, independent counts of CAB in twenty 20m transects. We detected six CAB species: Stygobromus vitreus, Caecidotea stygia, Typhlicthys subterraneus, Orconectes pellucidus, copepods, and Cambarus tenebrosus. The linked file contains dates of sampling events, transect number, observer’s initials, and abbreviations of cave aquatic biota (e.g., Stygobromus vitreus = STVI) detected in each transect. No water quality or quantity data were collected during this pilot.
