‘Aimakapā Fishpond: Paleoenvironment at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, North Kona, Hawai‘i Island

This report presents findings of a paleoenvironmental coring study undertaken at ‘Aimakapā Fishpond at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park (KAHO), in North Kona, Hawai‘i Island, under contract to the National Park Service. Following probes throughout the pond, three sediment cores were recovered, the longest reaching a depth of 123 cm below the pond bottom. A radiocarbon assay indicated an age of 1334-1408 cal. BP (AD 542-616) in peat at the base of the core. Other than the basal peat, the sediment column consisted of gelatinous silt, presumably formed primarily from the accumulation of autochthonous detrital algal material in the pond. Besides providing field and laboratory results, the report presents information about the local environment, a synthesis of background history related to the pond and vicinity, and previous paleoenvironmental research conducted in Hawai‘i and on Hawai‘i Island.
