This report contains administrative data and historical data for the buildings of Mumma Farmstead at Antietam National Battlefield Park. The report treats all buildings in the farmstead group as a single unit because it recommends that no structure is considered of sufficient historical significance to merit individual study. The structures in the group consist of a residence, barn, spring house, storage shed, smokehouse, and two smaller sheds. The report states that the structures will be used by the "resident farmer" permittee in connection with a farming operation, intended to further the park's effort to lease lands and structures to farmers who would keep fields in cultivation. This is intended to help preserve the pastoral scene that prevailed at the time of the battle, while also helping to maintain the park. No restoration, reconstruction, or rehabilitation was planned, and the farm buildings were not planned to be treated as historic structures for exhibit purposes. The report also includes historical data for the Mumma Farm, which became a part of Antietam National Battlefield Site in 1961. Of the original major buildings, only the Spring House is in existence today. The current house and barn are not considered historic structures because they did exist during the battle. During the Battle of Antietam, the Mumma Farmstead was within the Confederate lines. The larger buildings were ordered to be burned by Confederate Brigadier General Ripley to "prevent them being made use of by the enemy."
