Metrics of resilience and recovery in Floyd Bennett Field West, 2014-2016: Jamaica Bay Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area

This report contains linear, elevation, and volumetric feature changes of Floyd Bennett Field West, a site along the margin of Floyd Bennett Field, Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Surveys were conducted from the winter of 2014 to the fall of 2016, augmented by LiDAR datasets from August 2010 and July 2013, to track the impacts of Hurricane Sandy. The focus of this report is on the resilience and recovery of the beach and dune system along Floyd Bennett Field West. The analysis provides metrics of shoreline displacement, dune crest displacement, site elevation change, and site volumetric change. Floyd Bennett Field West had variable dune crest position, shoreline position, site elevation, and site volumetric change from 2010 to 2016. The shoreline exhibited erosion (inland displacement) in the south and accretion (seaward displacement) in the north throughout the survey period. In the Post-Hurricane Sandy LiDAR dataset, there was a breach in the foredune along the southern portion of the site that remained through the October 2016 survey. Beginning in May 2015, a new foredune line along the southern side of the embayment and the node developed seaward of the previous dune, and maintained its position through the final October 2016 survey. This change was also reflected in the volumetric gain in the dune area in the net November 2014 to October 2016 comparison. Floyd Bennett Field West had a relatively consistent spatial pattern of elevation and volumetric change from 2010 to 2016. There was loss in the southern portion of the site and gain in the northern portion. This pattern was evident in the 2010 to 2013 comparison as well as the net 2014 to 2016 comparison. Seasonal surveys showed variable elevation change, generally relatively small in scale. Despite volumetric loss in the south, there was a net gain in volume in both the beach and dune at Floyd Bennett Field West, showing persistence and resilience. Spatial displays of elevation change, volumetric change, shoreline and foredune linear feature change, and associated metrics are presented within the report.
