The report proposes that the Court House be reconstructed in order to contribute to the 1865 appearance of the village. The Court House was erected in the center of the Appomattox Court House village in 1846 and served the village until it was destroyed by fire in 1892. The replacement court house was built in the 1890s. Although no above-ground remains of the original Court House survived, archeological investigations revealed its size, location, and material details based on underground remnants. Photographs by Timothy O'Sullivan taken soon after General Lee's surrender provide additional evidence for the reconstruction.
