The removal of two hydroelectric dams on the Elwha River exposed approximately 534 acres of previously inundated riparian habitats. One of the primary goals of Elwha River restoration is to quickly revegetate and restore these habitats. Because birds are quick to colonize early-successional habitats and because they are cost-effective and relatively easy to study, they can be model organisms to assess restoration efforts and environmental conditions following dam removal.
