Tyromyces undosus in North America

Brotzman HC and Gilbertson RL. 1966. Tyromyces undosus in North America. Mycopathologia. 33(1):33-42

ABSTRACT: CHARLES HORTON PECK originally described Polyporus undosus from the Catskill Mountains of New York State in 1881. MERRILL (1907) proposed the new combination Tyromyces undosus (PECK) MURR. the name applied to the species in most of the current European literature. The combination Leptoporus undosus has been proposed by PILAT (1936-1942), but has not been generally accepted. The species has been subsequently reported as widely distributed throughout the North Temperate Zone. OVERHOLTS (1953) reports T. undosus from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Montana, Washington, Ontario, and British Columbia. LOWE & GILBERTSON (1961) add Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and Alaska to the list of states and provinces where T. undosus is known to occur in North America. In addition, specimens from Alberta, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Quebec are also reported in this paper. PILAT (1936-42) lists specimens from Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, Poland, Norway, and the USSR. BONDARZEW (1953) reports the fungus from the USSR in the Carpathian region and in Siberia, and PARMASTO (1963) includes T. undosus in a list of fungi from Kamchatka. LLOYD (1917) reports a specimen from Japan, but the only Japanese specimen so identified in the Lloyd herbarium is not T. undosus. Tyromyces pseudotsugae MERR., described by W. A. MURRILL in 1912, has been placed in synonymy with T. undosus by OVERHOLTS (1953).
