For this project, USGS and NPS scientists used the range of variation in historical climate data to provide context for assessing the relative impact of projected future climate on water availability. They used the SoilWat2 soil water model to translate climate variability into site-specific estimates of soil water conditions that may drive plant responses. Here past and future soil moisture for the clayey fan grassland of Petrified Forest National Park are described.
