Due to their position as a top predator, bald eagles within the Chesapeake Bay will always be vulnerable to contaminants that are introduced into the aquatic food chain. Exposure to organochlorine pesticides was the primary cause for the decline in the population during the 1950s and 1960s (Byrd et al. 1990).
