Description of the Pupa and Mature Larva of Matus ovatus ovatus Leech (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) with a Chaetotaxal Analysis Emphasizing Mouthparts, Legs, and Urogomphus

ABSTRACT: The pupa and mature larva of M. o. ovatus are described and figured, and the larva is compared to that of M. bicarinatus. A chaetotaxal study revealed that: (1) the larva of M. o. ovatus is distinguishable from that of M. bicarinatus by presence of higher numbers of both some leg and mouthpart sensilla (AV, DLb, PV, and V series) and presence of an enlarged APrV mesotibial spine and, (2) some sensilla and/or series of sensilla are potentially important phylogenetic characters. This is the first description of a matine pupa. The most unique pupal character is the presence of a very large triangular process on sternum six. A flexible and reliable system for designating sensillar series in larval matines that can be extended to other dytiscid groups is proposed.
