Appalachian National Scenic Trail Geologic Resources Inventory Scoping Summary

Port R. 2016. Appalachian National Scenic Trail Geologic Resources Inventory Scoping Summary

The purpose of a GRI scoping meeting is to 1) evaluate the adequacy of existing geologic maps for resource management purposes, 2) discuss distinctive geologic features and processes, and 3) identify potential geologic management issues. The NPS GRI scoping meeting for Appalachian National Scenic Trail was divided into three meetings, each held at a different location to facilitate attendance by participants spread over the wide geographical area covered by the trail. A site visit was not part of the scoping process. The first meeting was held on 2 May 2016 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee; the second meeting was held on 4 May 2016 at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia; the final meeting was held on 6 May 2016 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. Participants included NPS staff from GRD, Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Inventory and Monitoring Networks; GRI team members from Colorado State University; cooperators from state geological surveys and the US Geological Survey (USGS); staff from the USDA Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service; and faculty from the University of Massachusetts (table 1).
