The National Park Service (NPS) Geologic Resources Division held a GRI scoping meeting for Capulin Volcano National Monument on May 10, 2011, at the headquarters/visitor center, which is located 48 km (30 mi) east of Raton, New Mexico. Geologic scoping meetings generate an evaluation of the adequacy of existing geologic maps for resource management, provide an opportunity to discuss park-specific geologic management issues and, if possible, include a site visit with local experts. The purpose of these meetings is to identify geologic mapping coverage and needs, distinctive geologic features and processes, resource management issues, and potential monitoring and research needs.
