We collected soil and plant samples from declining Rhododendrons at one location in the Great Smokys National Park. We were looking for specific a fungus (Armillaria sp.) and a particular plant parasitic nematode species. We failed to find Armillaria spp. associated with the declining plants. We only found a single Longidorus nematode at one sample point. We do not believe that the fungus or the nematode are associated with the Rhododendron decline in the Smokys.
