Geology of Craters of the Moon

This report gives an overview of the geology of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, which includes almost all of the Great Rift volcanic rift zone. The monument is dominated by 3 geologically young (Late Pleistocene-Holocene) lava fields that lie along the Great Rift. The Great Rift volcanic rift zone is a belt of open cracks, eruptive fissures, shield vocanoes, and cinder cones.
