The purpose of this document is a to provide a framework for implementing a monitoring protocol as directed by the Going-to-the-Sun Road Corridor Management Plan (GSTR Plan). This monitoring protocol should help detect changes in the GTSR corridor and inform the implementation of management actions outline by the GTSR Plan. Overall, this monitoring protocol considers eight different components related to visitor use, visitor experience, and resource impacts in the GTSR corridor: trails, vehicles and roads, camping, the shuttle system, human-wildlife encounters, wilderness experience, park-wide visitation levels, and other visitor services. The contents of this monitoring protocol were developed through consultation of the GTSR Plan, conversations with Glacier National Park staff and management, best practices in park and protected area management, and the review of documents and analyses related to the GTSR Plan.
