Treasure of the Craters

Hammer CG. Treasure of the Craters. National Park Service

Story of the hunt for treasure stolen by thieves in the late 1870's and hidden in a cave on CRMO. The author obtained a special use permit (1954) and undertook excavations at Sunset cave. The Sunset cave site was arrived at by using "Old Man of the Craters" rock as a key landmark. A later field project by Hammer (1990, see ref 2252276) concluded this was likely in error and the real marker is an "Indian Head" rock located in the North Crater Flow.
