This Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) report documents and assesses the significance and integrity of the vernacular landscape of Wolfe Ranch in Arches National Park, north of Moab, Utah. This information guides Arches National Park managers for future development concerns in the study area. In addition to the vernacular landscape of the ranch, there is a possible ethnographic landscape associated with Ute rock art panels within the Wolfe Ranch Historic District. The CLI became necessary because the park decided to replace an unsafe suspension footbridge located within the Wolfe Ranch National Historic District. The park wanted the new bridge to both meet acceptable safely and accessibility standards, and to be designed and located so as to be less intrusive within the historic district. General site history includes the Ute or Paiute tribes that traveled through the area (between 1600 and 1900), arrival and improvements of John Wesley Wolfe and his son Fred beginning in 1898, subsequent transfers of ownership and use, and sale of the property to the U.S. Government in 1948. Because of the harsh climate and use of the site for sheep grazing well into the 1970s, there are no landscape features remaining from when the Wolfe family lived here between 1898 and 1910. The surrounding landscape contains water resources, native vegetation, and topography that provided the historic setting for the ranch structures.
