This document presents a narrative summary of the history of Arlington House (the Custis-Lee Mansion), beginning with its construction by George Washington Parke Custis between 1802 and 1818. The history addresses the structure and its surroundings, individuals, and use. In 1925, legislation was enacted to implement the restoration of Arlington House as a memorial to General Robert E. Lee. The early nineteenth century period was chosen as the target for restoration. The house was transferred to the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1933. Research needs are also identified.
