We examined the impacts of two very large, high-severity wildfire on Madrean pine-oak forests. Oaks recovered after the fires by resprouting vigorously, but pines, which are adapted to low-severity fire, regenerated poorly, shifting these community to shrublands. Extremely dry conditions over the past 25 years, plus adaptations to drought in oaks, appear to have contributed to this ecosystem conversion.
