This report presents administrative, historical, and architectural data with emphasis on the exterior painting of the Custis-Lee Mansion. It would continue to be used as a historic house museum interpreting the lives of the Custis and Lee families. Restoring the exterior paint to its 1861 appearance would advance the goal of restoring the mansion "...to the condition in which it existed immediately prior to the Civil War...," as put forth in Public Resolution 74 of the 68th Congress. The report includes the history of the mansion's exterior decoration, noting available photographic and physical evidence. Several photographs of the structure are included, spanning its 1864 appearance to a 1964 images showing restuccoing.
