Work performed by the 2017 Crater Lake National Park Invasive Vegetation Management program continued a 15-year effort to detect, contain, and reduce invasive plant species within the Park. A major accomplishment was the implementation of the Park’s new Invasive Vegetation Management Plan. Using manual and chemical methods an estimated 160,116 invasive plants were treated in 2017. One new-to-the-Park invasive plant species (wild carrot – Daucus carota) was discovered along a Park roadside. Large construction projects and two large wildfires occurring within the Park this season presented challenges to the Invasive Vegetation Management program. Wildfires prevented invasive plant survey and control efforts on the western half of the Park for the majority of the 2017 field season; the areas subject to fire closures should be high priorities for 2018 work. The Rim Drive Rehabilitation and Pacific Crest Trailhead well construction projects continued to cause much ground disturbance and increase potential for invasive plant introductions.
