Hot Springs National Park Visitor Use Counting and Estimation

Resource Systems Group. 2016. Hot Springs National Park Visitor Use Counting and Estimation

Hot Springs National Park (HOSP) last revised its public use statistics data collection procedures in 2008. That revision was the latest in a series of minor revisions of a basic methodology whose origin predates the earliest available PUSCRP documentation. Since 2008, a variety of changes have occurred within the park (e.g. building leasing, campground development, etc.) that are not accounted for in the existing visitor use counting and estimation procedures. Moreover, the urban location of HOSP within the City of Hot Springs and the various access points into the park, complicate procedures to estimate visitation. These factors combined suggest that the PUSCRP count procedures for HOSP require refinements to ensure that visitor use is being collected and reported accurately.
