Monitoring Douglas-fir Tussock Moth Outbreak Populations across Southern Idaho in 2017

A Douglas-fir tussock moth (DFTM) (Orgyia pseudotsugata McDunnough) outbreak began in 2015 in southern Idaho and population progression has varied depending on location. In 2015 and 2016, high trap catches of adult DFTM on the Salmon-Challis, Sawtooth and Boise National Forests indicated an outbreak was developing across historically defoliated areas (Lowrey 2016). In 2017 about 12 acres was defoliated on Grassy Cone and the moths were present throughout the stand as well as in the Douglas-fir stand on Sunset Cone in small numbers (no defoliation to date). This report details the results of surveys in 2017 to detect outbreaks, provides recommendations, maps and discussion
