As one of two national armories, the Harpers Ferry Armory was primarily established for the purpose of manufacturing firearms for the federal government. Initial construction began in 1798 with just a few buildings but, by its demise in April of 1861, the Harpers Ferry Armory was a very large and well‐equipped center of firearms technology. Although today it is best known for John Brown’s raid, the town of Harpers Ferry owes much of its history to the existence of the Armory. It was because of the large store of firearms at the Armory that John Brown came to Harpers Ferry, and it was because of these same stores and its firearm manufacturing machinery that it was destroyed within the first month of the Civil War.
