This report has been prepared to fulfill requirements of a Historical Resource Study Proposal. It attempts to document the appearance of a 3.5 acre portion of the Arlington estate as the Lees left it in May 1861. For convenience, the area under discussion has been divided in the following units: the east front grounds, the courtyard west of the house, the ravine and ice house, the stable and forest, and the vegetable garden. The flower garden and the major structures are not included in this report. The report makes extensive use of existing research by attempting to organize it to respond to a specific problem, which is the provision of historical data for the support of the possible restoration and/or reconstruction of the ground in a limited area surrounding the Mansion. The family of Robert E. Lee left Arlington House in May 1861. Since that time, the estate's forests and farmland had become the site of national military cemetery. At the time of the report, long-range plans of the Department of Defense call for the relocation of Cemetery Headquarters and the transfer of certain lands to the National Park Service. This would enlarge the NPS holding in the cemetery and make it possible to restore and reconstruct much of the immediate setting of the Custis-Lee Mansion as it was in 1861.
