ABSTRACT: Notropis ariommus and N. telescopus, two eastern North American cyprinid fishes long regarded as conspecific, are shown to be distinct species. The former has a spotty distribution and, until recently, was rare in collections. Only three specimens of N. ariommus are definitely known to have been taken between 1894 and 1949, but in recent years (particularly since 1962) it has been collected frequently, in some cases at localities that had previously been well sampled. Possible reasons for the spotty distribution and apparent recent increase in abundance of this species are discussed. Neither N. ariommus nor N. telescopus contain any nameworthy subunits, although some meristic and morphometric differences exist be- tween populations of N. telescopus from east and west of the Mississippi River. Both species are redescribed and figured, their nomenclatural histories reviewed, and their distributions mapped.
