Invasive plant monitoring in George Washington Carver National Monument: 2006–2016

Managers are challenged with the impact of problematic plants, including exotic, non-native, and pest plant species. Information on the abundance, distribution, and location of these plants is essential for developing risk-based approaches to managing these species. Based on surveys conducted in 2006, 2013, and 2016, Heartland Network staff and contractors identified 46 invasive plant species in George Washington Carver National Monu-ment. Of these species, we characterized 21 as low frequency/low abundance, eight as medium frequency/low to medium abundance, and three as high frequency/medium to high abundance. This pattern showed that most species were neither widespread nor highly abundant, suggesting that actions taken now may be highly effective in maintaining or reducing these invasive plant populations in the park.
