This report details the findings of a program of limited destructive investigation in the north wing of the Arlington House, conducted in May 1985 by the Williamsport Preservation Training Center. The purpose of the investigation was to resolve questions relating to the origins and evolution of the north wing of the structure. These questions had been raised when architectural features were uncovered during structural stabilization work (1980-81) and research for the Historic Structure Report. At that time, it had been determined that the north wing existed in some form as a freestanding structure prior to completion of the central block and loggia, and that there had been changes to the structure. This limited destructive investigation was recommended in order to establish the original building limits, siting, and features. The report includes the project methodology, explanation, and glossary. The physical evidence is presented as numbered drawings, photographs, and diagrams. Based on the evidence provided, the report concludes that the north wing, while initially constructed as a free standing unit, was designed as an element of the mansion as a whole concept.
