Great cavern was initially surveyed and mapped in the late 1960's by the concessionaire, Jim Papadakis. Idaho Cave Survey (ICS) surveyed and mapped much of the Great Rift in the King's Bowl area, including these caves, in 1990. Since then there have been notable changes in the caves. This project resurveyed Great Cavern through to Crystal Ice Cave, attempting to relocate original survey stations, and document the changes in the ice and rock slides/collapses.
