This checklist presents 216 species of birds known to have occurred within the boundaries of Petrified Forest National Park, since the park’s establishment in 1906. The checklist contains 33 species of birds have been confirmed to breed within Petrified Forest National Park, 6 that are probable breeders, 18 species that reside in the park throughout the year, 35 species that are found only during the summer breeding season, and 11 that are strictly winter residents. Two species who formerly occurred in the park, the Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Canyon Wren, have not been sighted over the last 20 years and are presumed to have been extirpated from the park. Although the check list was designed for use within Petrified Forest National Park, it will also apply to birdlife in adjacent areas.
