Part II of the James River and Kanawha Canal Historic Structures Report was created for a project, which planned to rest James River Canal and Locks was planned to be restored to as nearly original condition as feasible and interpreted to the public by aluminum exhibit panels. This follows and expands upon the proposal presented in the Part I report. The lock was one of a series along the James River and Kanawha Canal, which represents the canal transportation period of the nation's history. The lock's construction date is estimated to be about 1849. When the railroad was built, the lock gradually filled and was forgotten, along with the remainder of the canal, until restoration work was started in the fall of 1963 by the Blue Ridge Parkway. This section includes additional historical evidence and architectural details about the canal, which were revealed during excavation. With this information considered, construction activities are proposed. Measured drawings and photographs are included.
